The Cross-Cultural Kaleidoscope® for global leaders and their teams

Jenny Plaister-Ten, MA CMP, MAC, FinstLM

Following a stellar international business career, Jenny had identified cultural misunderstandings as one of the key barriers to co-operation, communication and efficiencies across cultures. This she observed, was derived from differing beliefs and values, that were misunderstood and misinterpreted by people who were fundamentally different from each other.

Upon returning to the UK from the Far-East and mainland Europe, she took a Masters-degree in Coaching and Mentoring Practice, where the focus of her dissertation was the impact of culture in the coaching relationship. This was awarded with distinction.

Jenny has developed a tool called The Cross-Cultural Kaleidoscope® which is designed to increase awareness of the multitude of cultural influences upon coaches and their clients. The accompanying coaching draws on cultural and personal identities and their differences amongst teams and groups. Building bridges ensues.

Having spent some years developing her knowledge of core constellations, she has integrated this approach into her practice using the Kaleidoscope. In this way, participants can share their felt experiences about membership of a cultural group/s across the lifespan. This in turn facilitates choice, even for those cultures who defer to a higher purpose rather than the agency inherent in individualist cultures.

Attendees will be introduced to the tool and to the theory and research that informed it. Participants should leave the session feeling better-equipped to handle intercultural contexts and may be empowered to further explore the cross-cultural domain.

The session will be informative and thought-provoking. It should inspire participants to think creatively about the topic of cross-cultural coaching, which perhaps has been overlooked.
