Ethics and Coaching: Quarterly Meet 2021-2022


Welcome to EMCC APR third ethics and coaching meet. This meeting will be highly relevant for cross cultural ethical dilemmas where our guest will share his lived experience in Southeast Asia and Africa as he was engaged in organizational research 'On and from the Global South: Overcoming the 'Perfect/imperfect' Dichotomy'. In his research that was funded by major stakeholders such as international NGOs and other philanthropic sponsors, "ethical dilemmas accompanied the project on a daily basis, and the first author, Peter, would often experience their occurrence in a visceral, embodied manner: as a discomfort felt in the body, communicating to him that something 'felt wrong' and was calling for attention."


Prof Case's indicative theory states the ethics of international development as well as about decolonisation of self, particularly colonised/coloniser perspectives, making sense of moral and ethical worldviews between Global North & Global South and more. (Research paper available upon request.)

Some of the contents that will be discussed are as follows –


1. Inspiration behind Prof Case's ten years' experience of leading and working on International Development (ID) research projects in Southeast Asia and Africa

2. "Instrumental rationality" vs "field reality" working with local counterparts which led to ethical dilemmas, micro-level embodied discomfort, de-colonisation of the self, 'ethical purity'


3. Case studies in small groups

Ethical decision-making is challenging at best; downright difficult at worst.Still, we need to be ethical as professional coaches because it defines who we are individually and as a society.We already see and feel the risks involved : that our society might fall into chaos if we accept that each of us could pick and choose what the right thing to do is.


The invitation is to take part in the discussions to set the standards of best practices in coaching in ethical terms and advocate the norms of behavior that everyone in coaching, mentoring and supervision should follow
