Event Details

Commencing January 2024, EMCC APR has hasted a book study group centered around the concepts of ethics, in a coaching / mentoring / supervising setting. Participants will be required to purchase and read the books on their own, then join the reflective meet for lively conversations. The book for we read in this group is Ethics: The Fundamentals by Julia Driver.

The purpose of the book study group is to:

  • Deep dive into the Global Code of Ethics
  • Explore the various theories in ethics
  • Deconstruct approaches to the Global Code of Ethics from normative ethics point of view
  • Reflectively apply ethical practice in coaching as well as in a world outside of coaching such as finding deeper meaning and increasing one's understanding of others

Pre-meeting preparation:

  • Read Global Code of Ethics.
  • Read the definitions of words called:
  • 'Value Terms': Intrinsic values, extrinsic value, and instrumental value (Chapter – Introduction) See the chart below for further reference.
  • 'Central Concepts': In another edition the author has changed from 'central concepts' to 'Moral Evaluation of Actions: Terminology'. This will enable us to have a common language within our group to discuss ethical matters. (Chapter – Introduction)
  • Read Chapter 2 of Ethics, "The Fundamentals"

Meeting Agenda:

  1. Reflection on why we have the Global Code of Ethics for the coaching industry, in value terms.
  2. Group discussion on which clause of the Global Code of Ethics would you put under which central concept (i.e. which actions recommended in code of ethics will you consider obligatory actions, right actions, forbidden actions, supererogatory actions, suberogatory actions, permissible actions etc.)
  3. Share insights and thoughts about Chap. 2.
